The ancient Chinese used to count years with the Heavenly Streams and Earthly Branches, and use twelve animals to represent the twelve Earthly Branches. The twelve animals were endowed with different meaning according to their nature, and there came into being the special Shengxiao culture. People born in the year of the animal are said to have some common characteristics with the animal. 2006 is the Year of the Dog. The dog is timely, brave, loyal, and devoted to its duty.

The obverse design features the pattern of Chinese ancient bronze ware -- dog shaped belt hook, and patterns of Acalypha hispida, together with the title of the Peoples Republic of China, and the year 2006. The reverse design features the painting -- "Clever Dogs" and the face value.
