Dr. Bela Schick (1877-1967) developed the test named after him to determine which children are susceptible to diphtheria, a childhood disease that was responsible for 10,000 deaths per year in the U.S. in 1927. This led to the eradication of this disease within 5 years. The unusually shaped rounded trapezoid medal measures over 2 inches in diameter and weighs 90 gm. of pure silver. Rare, only 180 were made in 1990 by Medallic Art Company, each individually serial numbered on the edge. Designed by Gerta Ries Wiener. New condition.
