To commemorate the 8th Asian Winter Games taking place in Sapporo, Japan on February 19-26, 2017, the Japan Mint has struck a legal tender 1,000 yen coin. The coins are 1-ounce of 99.9% pure silver, and have a worldwide mintage of 50,000 pieces.

This beautiful proof coin has a frosted relief against a mirror-like background, and features a Ski Jumper and a Figure Skater with eight snowflakes. The reverse has the official logo of the games in color, with pictograms of the 5 sport competitions (skiing, skating, biathlon, curling & ice hockey).

The Asian Winter Games is an international multi-sport championship competition, held by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to develop winter sports throughout Asia. The OCA has 45 member countries. The first event was held in Sapporo in 1986, and 2017 will be the 3rd time that the city has hosted the games. Besides Japan, other countries to have hosted the Asian Winter Games include China, South Korea, and Kazakhstan. The coins are available now from exclusive distributor Panda America.
