The People's Bank of China began issuing commemorative 12 lunar animals starting with the year of the rooster in 1981. The Year of the Rooster Coin in 1993 marked the beginning of the second cycle. The obverse design depicts a reproduction of Xu Beihong's "Rooster", face vaule and the year-date in Chinese.
