The Kingdom of Bhutan, an isolated country in the eastern Himalaya Mountains, competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Their athletes didn’t win any medals, but the country produced a permanent Olympic legacy in the form of gold coins. These gold coins are rarely seen in the numismatic marketplace, but PandaAmerica recently acquired a small group from a European source.
It was a tiny mintage, estimated at only 3,000 pieces, each in Gem Proof quality. A tae kwon do athlete is depicted. Tae kwon do was a demonstration sport at the Atlanta Games, and became a regular medalled event in 2000. The 5 Sertrums face value coin contains 7.78 gm. of 14kt (583 fine) gold.
