Shenzhen is a city of sub-provincial administrative status in southern China's Guangdong province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong. Owing to China's economic liberalization under the policies of reformist leader Deng Xiaoping, the area became China's first and arguably one of the most successful Special Economic Zones. The silver coin features the silhouette of a head ornamented by abstract symbols on the right, and a sculpture entitled "Break-through" on the left. The gold coin pictures the pioneering bull sculpture in the foreground; in the background are architectural structures illuminated by spotlights, and fireworks above. The pioneering bull sculpture located at the former Municipal Government Office Compound since 1984, has long been considered the symbol of Shenzhen's spirit, a city of innovation and reform.
