The modern commemorative series was launched in 1982, with an issue of Half Dollars celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of George Washington. Since then, commemoratives have been authorized by Congress and issued in denominations of Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, Gold Five Dollars, Gold Ten Dollars, etc. These coins are issued in two qualities - Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) and Proof (PR or PRF). BU coins are Mint State - lustrous with no sign of wear. Proof coins are specially made for collectors - with sharp details and brilliant mirrorlike fields.
