The gold sovereign was first introduced in 1489, during the reign of King Henry VII. King Henry was depicted seated on a throne, and it is from this inclusion of the monarch, or sovereign, that the new coin gained its name. In 1817, under King George III, the sovereign and half sovereign were standardized at 7.99 gm. and 3.99 gm., respectively, of 917 fine gold; these specifications have continued unchanged to the present.

The Britannia is a British bullion coin. The gold coin was first issued in 1987 and silver coins in 1997.

The United States Govern- ment has recognized over 150 Native American Indian Tribes ranging from the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma to the Zuni Tribe of the Zuni Reservation, New Mexico. They have been granted the tribal right of self- governance, with the ability to set their own priorities and goals for the welfare of their nations. One of these rights, that has only recently been exercised, is the issuance of coins.
