Australia's Perth Mint has produced legal tender gold bullion “Owls” under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. The first year of issue 2005 Owls are struck in gem prooflike brilliant uncirculated quality from the purest .9999 fine gold in limited editions. The barking owl (Ninox connivens), that is portrayed, is named after their loud and remarkably dog-like double bark (wook wook). They can be found throughout much of Australia. The Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse. Note that design and quality is the same as shown in picture, except denomination is 50 Dollars.
Tuvalu has been a member of the British Commonwealth since gaining full independence in 1978. Interestingly, the United States did not relinquish its claim to four islands, also claimed by Tuvalu, until the following year.
