Web special! Two of France's most important emblems are featured on this popular gold coin -- Marianne and the rooster. Marianne represents the French Republic, just Like Liberty represents the United States. Statues, busts, and pictures of Marianne show her wearing a Phrygian cap, the same cap worn by the freed slaves of Greece and Rome. The cap has since become a symbol of liberty and of the Republic. The rooster is a Gallic symbol that can be traced back to antiquity, and now represents modern France. The rooster even appears on the official state seal.
