Vietnam's
2003 Year of the Goat Coins Feature Holograms and Dazzling
Color
Vietnam has
issued 2003 coins commemorating the "Year of the Goat."
Three innovative varieties are offered on these legal tender
coins produced for Vietnam by the Singapore Mint - latent images,
dynamic hologram, and color - in addition to traditional brilliant
uncirculated and proof examples.
A silver
coin featuring a trio of goats (20 gm. 999 fine silver) has
been produced with four latent images, whereby the Chinese
character symbolizing good luck appears in four different
formats depending on the viewing angle; this is a security
feature to prevent counterfeiting. Only 6,200 of these proof
coins are available at the issue price of $55.
The hologram
that appears on silver (20 gm. 999 fine) and gold (1/2 oz.
9999 fine) proof coins is called "dynamic" by the
mint - and so they are, displaying a multitude of dazzling
psychedelic colors around a running goat in the center, surrounded
by the other eleven lunar zodiac animals. Mintages are 6,200
silver and 3,800 gold, priced at $68 and $395, respectively.
The multi-colored
silver (20 gm. 999 fine) proof coin pictures peach blossoms,
that are believed to bring good luck and happiness. The mintage
is 6,200, priced at $55 each.
The traditional
9999 fine gold "Year of the Goat" coins are 1/25
oz. Brilliant Uncirculated (28,000 made, priced at $39), and
a Proof ¼ oz. 9999 fine gold (1,800 minted, priced
at $195).
Of particular
interest, is the fact that the lunar-zodiac animals surrounding
the goat on the holographic coins include a cat in the traditional
position of the rabbit. This is the major difference between
Vietnamese and Chinese astrology.
