Panda America is happy to announce the release of both the GOLD and SILVER Shawnee Nation coins for 2009! The excited details are below:
The 1 ounce silver coin is 99.9% pure silver and features the Battle of Fallen Timber. This battle took place on August 20, 1794 between the Shawnee people and the United States over control of the Northwest Territory (an area bounded on the south by the Ohio River, on the west by the Mississippi River, and on the northeast by the Great Lakes). The battle was a decisive victory for the United States, however it ended major hostilities in the region for nearly 20 years. The battle, which took place not far from present-day Toledo, Ohio, did not last long. The Indians were greatly outnumbered and quickly routed. The inevitable defeat of the Indians led to a treaty being signed which ceded much of present-day Ohio to the United States and was instrumental in paving the way for the creation of the state of Ohio is 1803. The battle was fought by famous Shawnee warriors such as Blue Jacket and a young Tecumseh.
The 1/5 ounce gold proof coin is 99.9% pure and features the fierce Shawnee warrior, Chief Black Hoof. He was the head civil chief of the Shawnee Tribe in the Ohio Country, and claimed to be present at the Battle of the Monongahela in 1755. While little documentary evidence exists of him, it can be said that he was born in 1740 and died in 1831. He probably played a role in the Battle of Point Pleasant, but more importantly it was he that decided that American Indians needed to adapt culturally in order to prevent their destruction through warfare. In his later life he was an important ally to the United States. This coin has a low mintage of only 5,000 pieces!
The Shawnee Nation gold & silver coins are legal-tender & feature a reverse side with the crest of the Shawnee Nation as well as the year of issue, 2009. As one of the most popular coin series' that we carry, we expect these coins to quickly become true collectors items.
