First French
Euro Commemorative Coins Available
France's Ministry
of National Education and Ministry for the Economy joined forces
to organize a competition entitled "Imagine the first French
collector's coin in euro." About 30,000 9 to 10 year olds participated,
with the winning design created by students attending the Jean Jaures
school in Bort les Orgues in central France. Classmates at another
school in Salmagne, in the eastern part of the country, created
a colorful presentation card that holds the coin.
The imaginative
design on France's first euro denominated commemorative coin features
a string of stars that changes into children as it swings around
the denomination; the children then continue to the other side of
the coin, where they encircle the earth. A dove, holding an olive
branch in its beak, flies above.
This 30 mm. brilliant
uncirculated 1/4 euro coin, minted from the same golden alloy as the
euro coins made for circulation, is available at only $9.95 mounted
in a colorful presentation card.
The first precious
metal collector euro issued by France also has a 1/4 euro denomination.
It pictures the goddess Europa on one side and all 7 French euro trade
coins on the reverse, surrounded by the names of the 12 countries
in the European Monetary Union: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal
and Spain. This 13 gm., 900 fine silver proof coin comes in a colorful
album that contains an informative booklet. It is priced at $25.
