Year
of the Horse Coins
from China are Rare in United States
The Chinese Lunar-Zodiac
calendar is over 1,000 years old, but it was not until 1981 that China
issued its first Lunar-Zodiac coin. To commemorate the "Year
of the Horse," that began on February 12, 2002, China has issued
a number of silver and gold coins, but none are more difficult to
find outside of China than the decorative and colored series.
A modernistic
horse's head is featured on 1 oz. pure silver and 1/10 oz. pure
gold prooflike brilliant uncirculated legal tender coins. Mintages
are limited to 50,000 and 48,000 pieces respectively, but most are
reserved for sale in China. Very few are available from distributor
PandaAmerica, priced at $129 per set including presentation box
and certificate of authenticity.
The colored
1 oz. pure silver and 1/10 oz. pure gold horse coins from China
are also in very small supply in the United States, in spite of
their mintages of 100,000 and 30,000 respectively. The vast majority
of these were also sold in China. A very limited quantity are available
from PandaAmerica, priced at $78 for silver and $145 for gold, including
certificates of authenticity.
