The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are only 59 days away. As we get closer and closer to the start of the games in China, Panda America will occasionally inform you about newsworthy events surrounding the Olympics, events that are generating an international buzz and excitement for the games to start.
One such momentous event occurred just last week, as mountaineers carried the official Olympic torch to the summit of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. The event produced a triumphant demonstration of Olympic spirit and teamwork, as the final icy climb along Mount Everest’s edge was broadcast live on national TV.
Once reaching the summit, the team captain Nyima Cering, a Tibetan, yelled in English "One World, One Dream" — the slogan for the Beijing Olympic Games in August. Other team members, all dressed in red parkas with Olympic logos, unveiled Chinese and Olympic flags atop the Mountain. The live broadcasting of the climb was considered a technological feat, as heavy spending was used to build a television studio at the base camp and construct transmission points at four camps on the mountain. In addition, a company that specializes in burning systems for rockets developed the special torch for this journey. It was fueled by propane, and it burned brightly in the cold and windy Himalayan air.
