Corvette
Commemoratives Approved by GM
General
Motors has authorized a limited edition of silver medals and
handsome quartz watches in the year celebrating the 50th birthday
of the Corvette. The massive Corvette medal is 5 troy ounces
of pure silver, measuring an impressive 2 ½ inches
diameter. It is struck in Gem Proof quality, with blazing
mirror-like surfaces. One side depicts both exterior and interior
views of the classic original 1953 Corvette, while the reverse
pictures the tire and distinctive shiny hubcap. The designs
were created by award-winning sculptor Alex Shagin. Each commemorative
medal is individually serial numbered on the edge.
The watch
features the classic Corvette logo, with an Etta Swiss 22
jewel movement, solid stainless steel water-resistant case
and deployment link band. It has a stopwatch capability, calendar
and split second chronograph, and is available with either
a red or white dial.

Corvette
history started on June 30th, 1953 when production on the
first fiberglass Corvette roadster was completed. For the
most part, all 300 of the 1953 Corvettes produced were hand
built. The only engine choice was a Chevrolet "Blue Flame"
six-cylinder 235/150 engine, and it only came in Polo White
with a red interior. The original sticker price was $3,498.
