These Presidential coins are authorized by the Republic of Liberia, the oldest independent country in Africa, founded by free American slaves in 1847. Liberia has had a close association with several United States Presidents. Its capital Monrovia was named after James Monroe, a prominent supporter of the colonization of Liberia, and in 1862 President Abraham Lincoln extended official recognition to Liberia. President Jimmy Carter visited Liberia in 1978, and President George W. Bush was greeted warmly by the African nation in 2008.
